​​Teacher subject specialism training(TSST) in secondary Spanish, French and German

​Our focus is on providing training in a modern language alongside lesson observations and practical hands on experience in the Key Stage 3 and 4 classroom for teachers whose training was not in secondary modern languages, returning to teaching or for exisiting MFL teachers who need upskilling in another language. 
Delivery of the course will involve an online language course, training in the lead school and a day with Martine Pillette - looking at strategies to teach languages.
You will also receive regular contact with us and we will keep you informed of any other training/conference opportunities in the area.

Programme Elements

 
The course will:
• enhance the linguistic skills of participants to enable them to teach Modern Foreign Languages
• provide teachers with pedagogy and materials
• train teachers to deliver Modern Foreign Languages at Key Stage 3 and 4
• provide lesson observations and an opportunity to put these into practice in a classroom
• provide mentoring from the two lead teachers at Hayesfield Girls’ School


In order to assess level of language competency, participants will:
• take the Instituto Cervantes online assessment course to establish their level of Spanish language
• be assessed by Hayesfield Girls’ School to determine their French or German language needs.

Participants will:
• attend 12 hours of face-to-face learning with a combination of activities at  Hayesfield Girls’ School and training courses by Martine Pillette.
• register for an online course – Instituto Cervantes for Spanish, (which includes -  tutor support, self evaluation tests and 9 written tasks corrected by a tutor with comments and explanations) or a Rosetta Stone Course in French or German
• be given access to Hayesfield Girls’ School online learning platform (which includes online assessments) for French and German
• receive mentoring from the two lead teachers at Hayesfield Girls’ School

Participants will:
• spend one day at Hayesfield Girls’ School observing a range of lessons
• be able to teach a KS3 lesson
• be able to attend twilight training at Hayesfield Girls' School

Participants will:
• be enrolled on a Memrise course to acquire vocabulary
• be given access to all Hayesfield Girls’ School resources

Participants will:
• take part in a course run by two outstanding teachers
• observe lessons taught by experienced teachers at Hayesfield Girls’ School
• be able to visit other schools in the Bath Educational Trust Alliance
• learn from Instituto Cervantes online course, with professional tutors and regular feedback for 9 written tasks or from Rosetta Stone online courses in French or German
 
Resources include:
• individual Memrise account
• in house twilight training, used to train Hayesfield Girls’ School teachers
• access to Hayesfield Girls’ School YES  programme, run by UPS teachers to improve teaching and learning across the school
• course materials provided by Hayesfield Girls'School to get you started on your new teaching role

Subject knowledge
Participants will experience a range of activities to enable them to teach MFL to KS3 or 4. These will include face-to-face tuition and an online course. The online course has a personal tutor and regular assessments and individual feedback.
Pedagagy
Participants will be required to observe lessons at Hayesfield Girls’ School, or another BET school in order to see good practice in action in the classroom.  They will be given a range of teaching strategies and specific language structures in the 12 hours of face-to-face tuition to enable them to teach MFL to KS3 or 4. 

Participants will:
• be monitored on the Instituto Cervantes assessments during the course
• be asked to provide evidence of their teaching of the new language in their current school via lesson plans/video or in person at Hayesfield Girls’ School 
• be surveyed at the mid point of the course and at the end to identify any issues or on going training needs

Participants will:
• receive an Instituto Cervantes or Rosetta Stone certificate
• a certification of completion
